Let the Sun Shine Inn
Let the Sun Shine Inn B&B
Let the Sun Shine Inn, which has been featured on television's “Extreme Homes,” is an earth-friendly dome house built into the hillside above Prescott, AZ. We have unsurpassed views of the Prescott Basin, which includes the city of Prescott, the Granite Dells, and the surrounding mountains. On most days, we can see the Four Peaks outside of Flagstaff, AZ, more than 100 miles away. A bevy of rainbows sometimes surrounds us during the summer storm season.
A glass-enclosed cupola on the top of the house and careful placement of windows fills the house with sunlight. Using the earth to shelter the home tempers the extremes of both winter and summer weather, creating an environment that is warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Guests are welcome to use the common areas of the home, which include the living room, with its comfortable reclining sectional, the family room, complete with entertainment center and pellet stove, or the cupola, filled with light and plants. Outside the house, there are patios and a balcony off the kitchen, all of which overlook Prescott and the surrounding area.
The spacious guest room features a king-sized bed, sitting area, gas fireplace, private patio with hot tub, and TV/VCR. Guests are welcome to view videotapes from our collection. Those in the mood for stargazing are welcome to use our telescope. Guests may come and go as they please using a set of stairs next to the private patio outside of the guest room.
On weekends, we serve a full breakfast in our dining area or outside on the balcony, weather permitting. If our guests have dietary restrictions, we do our best to accommodate them. During the week, we offer the choice of a simple continental breakfast or no breakfast (and we adjust the price accordingly.)
Not only do we have outstanding views, we think our location is ideal. We’re far enough away from the traffic and congestion of downtown to offer a peaceful getaway and close enough to be convenient (a 5 minute drive.) Our home is adjacent to wild state-owned land, criss-crossed by miles of hiking trails that join the trails in the Prescott National Forest. So, whether you want great shopping, quiet relaxation, invigorating hiking, or some of each, you’ve come to the right place.
We share our home with a big mutt named Sophie and three crazy cats, Kiki, Ralph, and Cinnamon. The animals are not allowed in the guest room, however, in order to accommodate those with mild allergies. In general, dogs are welcome as guests at our inn but we do ask that you provide sleeping quarters (not on the bed) and don’t leave the dog unattended in the guest room. We are unable to allow visiting cats because of a possible allergic reaction from a future guest.
“We” are Sue and Harold, the innkeepers. We both work outside of the inn. Harold has his own practice as an orthotist (he makes braces like ankle braces and knee braces) called Roadrunner Orthotics. We also own a private water company outside of Flagstaff, AZ, which Sue manages.
The Prescott Area
Prescott, Arizona’s Bed and Breakfast city, offers a unique setting in Arizona. The area has fascinating history, natural attractions, art, and educational facilities. Visitors can stay in luxurious accomodations but escape to the wilds of Arizona. Hiking can start at Let the Sun Shine Inn with trails that can take hikers throughout the Prescott National Forest. Visitors can hike from other locations up Spruce Mountain, Thumb Butte, Granite Mountain, or elsewhere. There are lots of gravel roads throughout the forests and mountains allowing for off-road travel or mountain biking. We have 5 lakes within a few miles of our inn. Two of the most beautiful are Watson and Willow Lake, set in the middle of the Granite Dells with its unusual boulder formations. Lynx and Goldwater Lakes are set in the pines. And Granite Basin Lake is set at the base of 7500 foot high Granite Mountain. A drive down Senator Hwy takes you onto a gravel road through old mining country in the Bradshaw Mountains.
If art galleries and museums are on the “must-see” list, the visitor has a multitude of choices. Prescott has many art galleries, including two which are owned and operated by local artists. The Sharlot Hall historical museum takes up a couple of blocks downtown, with beautifully landscaped grounds and old hand-hewn log cabins. A volunteer staff, made up largely of people who were born and raised in the area, can give wonderful insight into what life was like in early Arizona. The Smoki Museum focuses on Indian Art and is a showcase for carefully crafted creations. The Phippen Museum houses rotating exhibits, most of them highlighting Western art and artists. The Prescott town square is home to weekend Art/Craft fairs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
For those who are looking for higher education, the Prescott area offers at least three outstanding colleges: Prescott College, Yavapai Community College, and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Let the Sun Shine Inn can offer a quiet haven for visiting family and friends of students away from the bustle of these college settings.
For rodeo fans, Prescott lays claim to hosting “The World’s Oldest Rodeo.” This rodeo takes place annually over the Fourth of July. Lodging accommodations are in short supply at this time so be sure to plan ahead if you’re coming to Prescott for the rodeo.
Prescott is also known as “Arizona’s Christmas City” and is a lovely spot for a holiday visit. There’s a Christmas parade and the “lighting” of the Courthouse square. The J.S. Acker Music Festival, held in early December, is sure to brighten the holiday spirit. The Festival takes place in shops around the Courthouse square and features musical styles ranging from blue-grass to steel-drum to choral.
Let the Sun Shine Inn is also well situated as a base for visitors from out of state to visit the many landmarks in central and northern Arizona. We are 2 hours from Phoenix, 45 minutes from Jerome, 1 1/2 hours from Flagstaff, 1 1//2 hours from Sedona, 2 hours from the south rim of the Grand Canyon, 3 hours from Lake Havasu City, and 2 to 3 hours from the White Mountains and the Mogollan Rim. There are many other Arizona attractions within a two to three hour radius of our Inn.
